How to Test IGBT?

IGBT Testing:

An insulated gate bipolar transistor, is a common semiconductor components commonly found in furniture and vehicles. Used as an electronic switch, a defective IGBT device may be a vehicle system or cause a short circuit, while the rest of the circuit is operational. Since the replacement of an IGBT is a simple, inexpensive process, testing functionality is a good idea to buy a new device. There are two ways to test the IGBT, both of which require an initial understanding of its function in a semiconductor circuit.

The insulated gate bipolar transistor is a three-terminal semiconductor device used to switch the power electronic devices with newer models, including refrigerators, air conditioners, and some stereo systems, but also electric vehicles. These devices are unique because they are a hybrid design that the gate-drive characteristics MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors) with high current capability and low saturation voltage, bipolar transistors are common fuse.

The most commonly used method of testing an IGBT is by using a digital multi meter. Collector-Emitter Junction Test:

The first way to use digital multi meter to test has a collector-emitter junction Test. To perform the test, remove all conductive foam around the first IGBT. Then, suddenly, the gateway to the transmitter. Turn on the multi meter to the diode check mode and check the reading. A normally functioning IGBT positive reading for the transmitter and negative for the collector.

Moreover, the counter should be on the positive side “open” or infinite. If there is damage to the IGBT, the measurement may be short on one or both sides, through the “open” in the negative direction, or by “ohmic” in the same direction.

Gate Oxide Test:

A digital multi meter is the Gate Oxide Test. To do the test, switches the multi meter to test resistance mode. The resistance of both the gate and the gate emitter to the collector. In both cases should be read as “open” or infinite. When the IGBT is damaged, then one or both of these measurements is short, or that there is a resistive leakage in one or both paths.
