Electricity is essential to modern life. It powers our lights, appliances, industrial processes.

Globally, the use of electricity is increasing rapidly as new major economic development in countries like China and India. The demand for electricity is driving a growing demand for electricity generation, with thousands of new plants need around the world in the coming decades.

Any form of electricity generation has its strengths and weaknesses. The future generation will need a range of options. They should be reduced low carbon in greenhouse gas emissions.

Many decades almost all consumed in the global energy produced from three different types of power plant – fossil, hydro and nuclear power. Renewables currently represent a relatively small portion of the electricity in the world, though that share is growing rapidly.

Fossil:

Fossil fuel power plants burning carbon fuels like coal , oil or gas to steam that drives large turbines to generate electricity generation . The plants can reliably generate electricity for a long time . However , by producing the combustion of carbon fuels they have large amounts of carbon dioxide , which causes global warming. They can also be other pollutants , such as sulfur oxides , which cause acid rain .

Fossil fuel plants require large amounts of coal, oil or gas. These fuels may need to be transported over long distances. The price of fuel may rise sharply in times of scarcity , leading to stable generation costs .

Hydro:

Large hydropower plants generate electricity by storing water in large reservoirs behind large dams. Water flows out of the dams through turbines to generate electricity, and then continues to flow through the river below the dam.

Hydro can dams to generate large amounts of electricity . However , dry weather could drain the reservoirs. The flooding of the reservoirs behind dams and slowing the flow of the river below the dam would have a serious impact on the ecology around the dam.

Nuclear:FN

Nuclear power plants make use of the heat produced by nuclear fission to generate steam that drives turbines, such as fossil fuel plants. No greenhouse gases produced in the fission process.

Reactor uses nuclear fuel for several years. Used fuel remains is stored. Much lower amount of fuel is used to generate electricity.

The nuclear power plants can run for several months without interruption, providing reliable and predictable supply of electricity.

Nuclear power plants can produce electricity “24/7” for many months. Nuclear production is one of the safest and most environmentally friendly forms of electricity

Renewables:

Renewable energy sources like wind, solar and hydro are used to generate electricity. Generation of electricity is without greenhouse gas emissions at the place of production. Very low amounts of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the life cycle.

The cost of generating electricity from renewable energy sources is much higher than any other form of generation.

Many renewable energy no electricity to produce predictable and consistent. Electricity generation from wind turbines vary with wind speed. The output of the solar panels confidence in the strength of the sun. Solar is dependent on the time and the amount of cloud cover.
